A service that connects customers with tradespeople, Rated People suggests that the trend for 2010 will see homeowners carrying out DIY projects and refurbishment to their homes rather than move to new properties.

Chief executive officer and founder of Rated People Andrew Skipwith says people often carry out DIY plans to increase their home's value.

He said: "Many homeowners throughout the UK are looking to potentially add value to their property and make it more of a long-term investment through DIY".

This news follows another survey from the company, which found that energy efficiency would be the primary concern for those utilising DIY skills over the course of the year.

Newspaper columnists have recently praised those undertaking DIY tasks around the home, with comedian Shazia Mirza publishing comment in the Guardian which highlighted the money that can be saved.
