DIY kitchen projects 'take time to plan'

DIY kitchen projects 'take time to plan'Homeowners have been advised not to jump straight into their dream kitchen DIY project simply to beat the VAT rise in January.

Ronnie Whelan, editor of Essential Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom, said new kitchens take time to plan out properly.

"It will take some time researching the cabinetry and appliances," she explained. "It is a big investment and you don't want to get it wrong."

This is particularly true now that homeowners are seeking kitchens with the wow factor rather than creating simple, functional spaces for cooking.

Ms Whelan explained that the "growing band" of celebrity chefs has inspired ordinary families to turn their kitchens into a space for entertaining.

"Having a kitchen where you can show off your cooking skills is top of everyone's list," she insisted.

Her comments come after a survey by insurance group LV= found that the average amount spent on kitchen DIY projects has risen by 45 per cent in the last five years.
