Changing door locks

Summary: Learn how to change a door lock, change a cylinder rim lock, change a mortise lock, change a mortise door bolt and change a hinge door bolt.

Door locks may need to be changed for a number of reasons such as damage to a lock, lost keys or to prevent an individual from accessing your property. There are different types of lock, each with their own method of assembly.

Cylinder rim lock (Yale lock)

Perhaps the easiest to replace is the Yale lock, which has a barrel (where the keys goes in) that can be detached independently of the rest of the lock system and replaced without the need for an entire lock change. See how to change a cylinder lock.

Mortise lock

This is so called the mortise lock as a slot in the door (mortise) needs to be cut out in order to fit the lock. This is a fiddly and fairly difficult task for the DIY enthusiast to complete as knowledge of woodworking is needed as cutting the mortise requires some skill. This type of lock is generally stronger than that of the Yale lock. See how to change a mortise lock.

Mortise door bolt

This is a bolt that is mortised into the door. It shoots the bolt out either using a thumb or key turn which locks the door. It is a good option for added protection and to enhance your door strength. See how to change a mortise door bolt.

Hinge door bolt

A different type of door lock, the hinge door bolt is fitted to the hinge side of the door and is designed to prevent doors being taken off their hinges by criminals trying to access buildings. There are typically two or more bolts located under the top hinge and above the bottom hinge. They are fixed into the door, and when the door is shut, are pushed into a hole in the door frame safely securing the door. See how to change a hinge door bolt.
