How to fit a self cutting tap

A self cutting tap is a useful device, which when attached to your piping, can be used for plumbing in washing machines and dishwashers. A self cutting tap can also be used to drain your central heating system if a drain valve has not been fitted. One thing to be aware of is that these taps may cause reduced flow.

Fitting a self cutting tap

  • Typically designed to fit on 15mm diameter copper pipe, these taps shouldn’t be used on anything else. Plastic piping is not suitable.
  • Start by ensuring the nut at the cutting end of the tap is tightened all the way up to the taps body.
  • You will need to attach the back plate to the copper pipe. The back plate is a separate component from the tap and consists of two pieces of metal that wrap around the copper pipe. The self fitting tap then screws into the back plate.
  • Place the the first back plate component behind the pipe where you want the tap fixed. Then line up the front component, making sure the rubber washer is in place.
  • Insert the screws, which will secure the two back plate components and make sure it is evenly tightened so no leakage occurs. Be careful not to over-tighten as this may compress the pipe.
  • Isolate the water supply to the pipe you are working on and carefully screw the tap into the hole until it becomes stiff. Adjust the taps position so it is 90 degrees to the pipe.
  • Tighten the locking nut on the tap to secure it in position. Do this by holding the tap with one hand and tightening the nut with a spanner.
  • Now you can connect a service pipe for your appliance to the tap. Make sure the washers are in place, and check for leaks before fully installing the appliance. Tighten if necessary.
