Sustainability 'should be a priority for DIY projects'

Sustainability 'should be a priority for DIY projects'DIYers should consider sustainability when planning home improvement schemes to save money in the long-run, according to an expert.

Tim Pullen, author and eco specialist who assists clients in making their properties more energy-efficient, explained to homeowners that if something like energy saving is made a priority immediately, living in the building in the long-term will be easier to afford.

He added that such future proofing needs very careful planning and can help to get round the fact that houses could become too expensive to repair and maintain if not made sustainable.

"It is cheaper to run, it requires less maintenance and will have a longer life, therefore it is better than the house next door and therefore it is worth more," he stated.

Richard Diment, director general of the Federation of Master Builders, announced in a speech in September that financial incentives should be made available to encourage sustainable home improvement schemes.
