Getting to grips with DIY could be an effective way for people to add value to their home.
Citing recent research carried out by HSBC, Christina Jordan – in an article for Love Money – points out that adding a new bathroom could increase property prices by an average of ยฃ2,442.
Meanwhile, decorating and recarpeting a home may see property values rise by ยฃ1,994 and ยฃ1,273 respectively, while resurfacing a drive can add ยฃ1,283.
However, Ms Jordan claims that consumers’ motivation for DIY should not be solely driven by the desire to increase value.
“Of course many of us make home improvements in order to better enjoy our homes and have every intention of continuing living in the property,” she states.
Meanwhile, those wanting to attempt a large DIY project may be interested to hear that adding a conservatory could see a home’s value typically rise by just over ยฃ7,000.
Speaking recently, Andrew Leech, director for the National Home Improvement Council, claimed that adding an extension on to a home is “a good idea”.
