Energy saving light bulbs being used as a learning aid

Updated:5th September 2019No Comments2 Mins Read

Energy saving light bulbs are not just helping the environment, they are also helping school children to get more out of their daily lessons according to one Asian nation.

Around 18,000 classrooms in Vietnam provinces including Hanoi, Hai Phong and Vinh Phuc have replaced their old lighting systems with energy saving light bulbs. The results since launching the replacement drive in 2006 have been nothing short of amazing.

One school has reported a fall in the number of students suffering from short sightedness, reduced electricity bills and a greater student engagement with the learning process. As a result, the children studying in classrooms with more energy efficient lighting are getting more out of their daily education and enjoying lessons a lot more.

The Truong Tieu Hoc elementary school told of one student who was able to downgrade their glasses prescription from a minus 2.5 before energy saving lighting to a minus 2.0 after energy saving light bulbs had been installed in his classroom. Other students also showed signs of improved eyesight with a 2% drop in the number of children suffering from near sightedness after energy saving bulbs were fitted.

With modern technology being used to drive energy savings, new environmentally friendly lighting can contribute to significant savings on electricity costs. Schools and the manufacturer of Vietnam’s new scholastic energy saving light bulbs confirm this, estimating that each classroom using sixenergy saving bulbs in place of old fluorescent tubes use around 226 watts. Used in eight classrooms, the school has saved between 30 and 40 per cent on their energy bills.

These savings are not restricted to schools or workplaces – replacing incandescent light bulbs with energy saving alternatives can also lead to noticeable domestic energy savings. An extended lamp life of up to 15,000 hours also means replacement costs are fewer and farther apart than when using traditional bulbs.
