Many Britons see DIY projects as a means of improving home security, a new survey has found.
According to a report produced by Gocompare.com, three quarters of households say they intend to improve their gardens with an average spend of £420, while 24 per cent claim they are concerned about the safety of their garden.
Further to this, the report discovered that seven per cent of these garden projects are intended to improve security.
Melanie Griffiths, assistant editor at Homebuilding and Renovating Magazine, explained that many self-builders are "conscious" of the dangers involved in poor security around DIY projects.
"You can get smart lighting systems that can simulate occupancy of the house. That can be a factor for the garden as well," she added.
"Security lights would be your number one for the garden."
The Shelter and the Royal Institute of British Architects claimed last month that 73 per cent of homeowners have a dream home improvement project and that making the most of space and improving the look of their property is their primary motivation.
