Homeowners on a budget should reorganise the existing space within their property to increase its value through DIY projects, according to a property expert.
A recent study by Sainsbury’s Home Insurance has shown that the number of UK homeowners planning to add an extension has fallen by 39 per cent within the past year.
However, it is still possible for property owners to improve their homes without major structural changes – with modern plumbing making it easy for an enthusiast to add bathrooms as DIY projects.
"If you have got a big bedroom, with today’s modern plumbing technology you can always put an en suite into the bedroom," explained Andrew Leech, director of the National Home Improvement Council.
"There are other potential ways around improving what you have already got without going outside the envelope."
Loft conversions are another popular way to increase living space, with 873,000 planned in the next year.
They are also a sound investment, on average costing £15,766, but adding £24,981 to the value of a property.
