Homeowners have been given some DIY advice by uSwitch on how to carry out a number of simple tasks that should help them make their properties more energy efficient.
According to the price comparison service, the average energy bill for a British household now stands at £1,239, which is 36 per cent higher than it was two years ago.
However, Will Marples, energy expert at the organisation, commented: "Rather than sitting back and hoping for further reductions we can all give ourselves a substantial price cut on our energy bills today."
This can be done by insulating the loft to a depth of at least ten inches, the company stated.
In addition, it is important that householders make sure they seal their doors and windows, so that draughts are kept out of the home and the heating is not needed as much.
Aviva recently suggested homeowners should insulate the top of their pipes to ensure that they do not freeze in the cold weather currently being experienced throughout the country.
