DIYers may want to do some home improvements to protect their properties from burglars, the home insurance provider More Than has said.
Some tips for homeowners to avoid getting broken into this winter include installing locks on windows that are at ground level or easily accessible.
A quick DIY task that was recommended is to fit a security chain to the front door and replace those locks that do not conform to the British Standard.
The insurance provider also suggested installing a solid timber door to replace hollow-core ones as they are much stronger to withstand a break-in.
Annette Lepper, head of More Than home insurance, commented that all householders should check the security of their property.
"Being burgled is an extremely distressing experience, so it’s important to be safe and look to prevent situations that can aid a break-in," she added.
Last week an online crime map was launched which allows people to look at the crime in their area and compare it to other places.
