Sales of DIY equipment and furniture are expected to jump in the next fortnight as homeowners look to beat the VAT rise.
Anna-Marie Desouza, editor of Built It magazine, said large purchases are likely to be made before the tax rises to 20 per cent on January 4th.
"I am absolutely certain that before the end of the year there will be a rush from consumers investing in the more expensive items for their homes to save themselves money on VAT," she remarked.
Indeed, she said those planning large home improvement projects, such as new kitchens and bathrooms, would be wise to make a purchase in the next two weeks.
However, she urged homeowners to be sensible and to consider whether they have time to carry out their DIY projects straight away, and if not whether they have room in their homes to store any items they buy.
"I've heard countless tales of people investing in large items, storing them inappropriately and damaging them," she warned.
