DIY expert Michael Holmes has given a number of tips to homeowners wanting to renovate their house and increase its market value.
Firstly, he suggested that it is important to start out with essential repairs, which will be extremely beneficial in the future and make a lot of difference to the home.
He advised people to make sure their roof is in a sufficient state, there is no damp, they have added central heating, plumbing is to a good standard and, importantly during the winter months, the building is weatherproof and warm.
After these important steps, he went on to encourage renovators to improve the appearance of the house, which can increase its value by up to five per cent, he said.
This includes getting new carpets, repainting and improving the layout and practicality of the building.
He commented: "Then without any remodelling or extensions you can completely transform that property and its appeal and thereby its value."
Michael Holmes is the editor-in-chief of Real Homes Magazine and Homebuilding & Renovating Magazine and presents the TV programme I Own Britain’s Best Home on Five.
