Homeowners can prevent burst pipe emergencies this winter by carrying out some simple preventative DIY tasks.
According to insurance firm AXA, severe weather conditions have led to double the normal volume of new claims being made on home insurance policies.
Burst pipes caused by freezing accounted for 15 per cent of all claims made last weekend, when sub-zero temperatures were seen across many parts of the UK.
Almost 65 per cent of all new claims related to snow and cold weather.
Steps can be taken to minimise the risks, many of which are inexpensive and could save money and stress in the long-run.
Insulating pipes and lagging water tanks is one way to prevent freezing, while keeping central heating on low can also help.
Repairing dripping taps is also advisable, as freezing will cause blockages. This could also help homeowners save water throughout the year.
In the event of an emergency, it is essential that homeowners know where their stop tap is located and can turn it off easily.
