It is important that DIY projects are carried out properly, as botched jobs can have a negative impact on a home's value and can even cause serious accidents.
This warning comes from the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), which said that since a home is most people's biggest financial asset, it makes sense to keep it well maintained.
The group's director of external affairs, Brian Berry, explained that a property that has been properly cared for will be worth more and will be much easier to sell in the future.
However, he stressed: "It is very important to ensure that any maintenance and improvement work is done to a high standard because a botched DIY job can be a false economy as it will lower the value of a property."
The FMB also found that over 200,000 DIY enthusiasts are admitted to hospital every year after messing up home improvements.
