Homeowners may be carrying out DIY repairs on their paths and driveways in the spring if the winter turns out to be as cold as expected.
Freezing temperatures, ice and snow have hit many parts of the UK in the last fortnight and the Met Office is warning of more to come.
Now potholes.co.uk, which is a website run by insurance firm Warranty Direct, is warning that this year could be the worst ever pothole season.
It pointed out that potholes are caused when water or snow gets into cracks in road surfaces and pavements.
When it freezes, it expands, widening cracks and causing large holes that can be dangerous to motorists and pedestrians, as well as being an eyesore.
Councils are responsible for repairing potholes on public roads, but homeowners who find them on their own property may have to fix the damage themselves.
Laying flags or tiles on patio areas could solve the problem, while preparing outdoor areas for the warm summer months.
